Engagement

A contract engagement with Discovery Networks in London, from August 2016 to April 2018, working within a team of ten on REST API development for the company’s content and media systems.

Approach

The work covered new features, ongoing maintenance and debugging across several production REST APIs built in Laravel and Lumen, supporting systems including Dplay — Discovery’s video-on-demand platform — alongside a TV Listings API, a Payment API and a Content API. As part of a wider effort to modernise deployment, the team also containerised these APIs with Docker, working directly alongside Discovery’s DevOps engineers rather than handing the work off after development.

Stack

Laravel and Lumen REST APIs, Docker containerisation, and a Scrum process run through JIRA and Confluence.

Outcome

Nearly two years working inside a ten-person team on APIs that supported live, high-traffic media products — the kind of long-running contract engagement where the work has to hold up under continuous production use, not just at the point of delivery. This is representative of our backend development work at enterprise scale, inside an existing engineering organisation rather than as an isolated project.
